Diabetes and vision

Article

In patients suffering from diabetes mellitus after 10 years of the disease, eye complications, also known as diabetic retinopathy, usually begin. Good blood sugar control with the new generation of insulins delays the onset of diabetic retinopathy, but the involvement of the ophthalmologist with proper therapeutic approach (Argon laser photocoagulation sessions and injection of anti-VGF drugs) will be instrumental in maintaining very good vision throughout the lifetime of the diabetic patient.

There are cases where an uncontrolled sugar condition results in significant eye strain with neovascularization, which can cause vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment. In these severe cases the treatment is only surgical. New generation machines and instruments have helped tremendously in the management of severe diabetic bleeding and detachment cases because they provide greater precision in surgical manipulations, less intraoperative tissue injury, greater safety in the management of complications and, finally, due to less traumatic burden, shorter postoperative recovery.
