The man who «sees» with his ears!

Article

We all know that bats use a kind of sonar to accurately «see» the environment around them! What you may not know is that American Ben Underwood is the only person who sees in the same way.

At a very young age he had to have both eyes removed due to cancer. Ben has since discovered that he could accurately identify where things were around him by producing a short sound with his mouth. The reflection of his sound creates an internal visualization, detailed and highly accurate enough, such that Ben can locate the basket and play basketball!

But the vocal abilities of humans cannot compare with those of dolphins, for example, which can locate much smaller objects with great accuracy.

Scientists call the phenomenon echolocation and are focusing their attention on the field of rehabilitation.
