I see a lot of ‘flies’ today. Can it be classified as an emergency during the coronavirus pandemic?;

Article

Flies can be a sign of a problem such as a retinal tear, vitreous hemorrhage or retinal detachment. ‘Flies’ are most of the time harmless and are not a threat to our vision. But they can be a sign of a more serious problem that requires immediate eye examination.

These signs include:

  • The ‘flies’ appear darker than normal.
  • We are seeing an increase in their numbers.
  • We see flashing lights - flashes.

Many clinics have limited opening hours and follow certain restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic, so it is best to call our ophthalmologist first, report our symptoms so that they can be assessed and see if an immediate examination is required.
In general, and especially now during this health emergency, it is better to call our ophthalmologist immediately for an evaluation of our symptoms (‘flies’ - flashes) instead of going to a Health Centre or a hospital.
