Risks That Can Threaten Our Vision During the Holidays

A high percentage of eye injuries occur during the holidays.

In fact, their frequency is increasing year by year.

So let's see what we need to watch out for in and around the house.

1. Be careful when cooking.
   Oil, especially oil spilled from the pan, is one of the most common causes of eye injury.
   Most likely we know that eggs «throw off» a lot of oil when they are fried.
   But the same is true for any food that gets wet with water in hot oil.
   The best solution, therefore, is to cover the pan with its lid or with a special, thin sieve if you want to see the food.

   Preparing the house for the guests of the reception can be extremely dangerous for the eyes.
   Garden tools such as the lawnmower, pruning shears, etc. can easily blow up sticks, as can nailing or drilling holes in walls.
   In all these cases, wearing protective glasses can be a lifesaver for the eyes.
   The same goes for the kitchen, if we plan to clean the oven or the drain in the sink with chemicals.
   Very often these chemicals are caustic and dangerous.
   The risk of an eye accident is even greater if you have to pour hot water over the chemicals.
3. Read the instructions for use.
   One of the easiest ways to prevent eye injuries is to carefully read the instructions for each product.
   This applies to everything from new tools and cleaning products to kitchen appliances.
   The chances of injury are greatly reduced when we follow the manufacturer's instructions instead of improvising.
4. Avoid putting presents under the Christmas tree.
   Although this is an idyllic scene in Christmas movies, there is nothing idyllic about a tree needle in the eye.
   This advice is particularly important for those with young children at home, remembering that children have no sense of danger.
5. Be careful with the champagne cork.
   Cork accidents are a major problem of any celebration, because if we aim the bottle at the person opposite us, we can easily hit them.
   So when you open the bottle of champagne, make sure you point it towards a place where there is no one around, and away from windows.
6. Beware of fireworks and confetti launchers.
   They are a major problem of every celebration, as they have caused serious injuries to many people.
