A study by Dr. Jennifer Beebe-Dimmer et al, Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan, USA, showed that androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), used to treat prostate cancer, could help to treat the development of cataracts.
(ADT) has already been tested to increase the chances of developing DM and other heart problems.
The study included 66000 prostate cancer patients aged 66 years and older. Almost half of the patients underwent ADT treatment within 6 months of diagnosis. For every 1000 patients studied, 111 cataracts were diagnosed.
Men who underwent ADT had an average of about 9% in increasing their risk of developing cataracts. An amount that is 26% greater than orchiectomy patients.
In conclusion, it was estimated that a 5% of cataract cases in prostate cancer patients could be attributed to ADT.
