Glasses against the development of myopia.

Article

Proper prescription can reduce the development of myopia. This was shown in a recent ophthalmological study of 135 children with progressive myopia. The study included three groups.

The first wore monofocal, the second double-focal and the third double-focal with integrated prism.

The first group showed a faster rate of myopia increase while the other two groups showed smaller changes in refractive status.

This idea is not new. Behavioral and developmental optometrists have been using bifocals and multifocals for many decades to ensure maximum visual performance and comfort during near vision regardless of age and to limit the development of myopia.

This new ophthalmological research thus supports correct prescribing as a means of reducing myopia.

The use of glasses is probably the most economical solution among other proposed solutions. Although further research will be needed to reach definitive conclusions, knowledge of prescribing techniques in combination with e.g. orthokeratology, vision training, atropine etc. can improve the future of myopic patients.
