Sunglasses and Eye Protection

Article

We choose sunglasses that we like and that fit our face, but we need to know that they are more than just accessories.

To the question, would we ever leave our house without sunscreen on our face? the answer would have to be, no. But, even though we live in Greece, with sunshine 360 out of 365 days a year, no one explains to us what photo-aging is, i.e. the damage caused by solar radiation to our skin. In most cases, first we experience it and then we try to find a way to save ourselves. For the record, photo-aging starts at puberty, but it takes 10 to 40 years to become apparent. The shield our eyes definitely need against the sun is the sunglasses.

The sun's damaging effects depend on how often we are exposed to its rays, how long we stay exposed and how intense the radiation is. Accordingly, we sooner or later acquire dry and rough skin, wrinkles, sagging, discolouration and even solar hyperkeratosis.

The scars come as a consequence of the destruction of the skin cells that we have burned and can even cause skin cancer.

In a recent survey, 74% of respondents said they were more likely to wear sunglasses after discovering that they can protect their eye health.

61% stated that he was more likely to wear sunglasses if he knew that larger sunglasses also offer better protection from UV radiation, i.e. they do not allow the sun to enter from the side.

It is very useful for everyone to know that good lenses that offer 100% protection from UV radiation do not cost a lot of money. At a low cost we can ensure something that will keep harmful radiation out of our eyes or away from your child's eyes.

Sun exposure increases the risk of developing cataracts, with ultraviolet light affecting us whether it's sunny or cloudy. We are susceptible to it at all ages. It is advisable to take precautions when we are young.

Let us also know that the level of protection we have is not related to the colour of the lens. The different colours in sunglasses serve specific needs related to contrasts. That is, if we are playing a sport on the beach, such as volleyball, we need to see the ball clearly.
