What is Blepharitis?;
It is a common inflammation of the eyelids located at the base of the eyelashes. It is divided into anterior and posterior blepharitis (dysfunction of the meibomian glands). Although it is often chronic, it can lead to acute complications such as barley (crithiasis), conjunctivitis or even keratitis due to constant irritation.

Diagnosis & Symptomatology
The diagnosis is made by clinical examination in the slit lamp. Patients report burning sensation, itching (itching), redness and characteristic skin scaling or “dandruff” at the base of the eyelashes.
Therapeutic Protocol
The cornerstone of treatment is systematic hygiene:
Hot Compresses: Apply for 5 minutes (twice) so that the secretions of the glands are fluidized.
Massage & Cleaning: Gently rub the eyelids with clean gauze and use a solution of neutral baby shampoo.
Medication: In flare-ups, the ophthalmologist may prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory ointments and ointments to control the microbial load.

How will you feel relief?;
The secret lies in cleanliness. Follow the steps below:
Hot Compresses: Wet a clean towel with warm water (check the temperature of your cheek!) and leave it on your closed eyes for 5-10 minutes. This “softens” the crusts.
Gentle Soap: Use some non-stinging baby shampoo in a gauze and carefully clean the base of the eyelashes.
Perseverance: At first do it 2-3 times a day. Once the problem has subsided, once a day is enough to prevent it from recurring.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is blepharitis cured for good?;
Blepharitis is considered a chronic condition, like dry skin. It cannot be “cured” in the sense that it will disappear forever, but it can remain fully suppressed and not bother you at all, as long as you follow the rules of hygiene.
Why should I use hot compresses?;
Inside the eyelids are small glands that produce oil to keep tears from drying out. In blepharitis, this oil thickens and clogs the glands. Heat melts this thick oil, allowing the glands to work properly again.
Can I wear makeup if I have blepharitis?;
In the acute phase (when there is intense redness and itching), it is advisable to avoid makeup. When the condition is under control, you can, but you should be meticulous with your make-up and avoid using products (e.g. eyeliner) through the lash line.
Is blepharitis associated with dry eye?;
Very often. Because blepharitis affects the quality of tears (they become “poorer” in fatty elements), tears evaporate more quickly, causing a feeling of dryness and sand.
What happens if I don't pay attention to her?;
If you neglect it, the inflammation can cause the eyelashes to fall, abnormal growth towards the inside of the eye (trichiasis), permanent scarring of the eyelids or even ulcers in the cornea.
Is baby shampoo necessary?;
Children's shampoo is recommended because it has a neutral pH and does not irritate the conjunctiva if it gets in the eye. However, special foams or soaked wipes for cleaning eyelids are now available in the pharmacy, which are even more effective and easy to use.
