The Doctor

Dr. Stratos V. Gozzarides is a vitreoretinal surgeon and Founder and Medical Director of the My Retina Athens Eye Centre in Athens, a specialized center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases, both with medical and surgical methods.

Graduated from the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and specialized in Ophthalmology at the AHEPA University Hospital in Thessaloniki.

He then undertook specialist training in the UK,

initially with a fellowship in Uveitis and Inflammatory Diseases of the Eye at Croydon University Hospital, London, under Mr William Ayliffe.

This was followed by two fellowships in Vitreoretinal-retinal surgery,

first to Southampton University Hospital led by Mr Chris Canning and Mr Andy Luff and

then to the famous Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, led by Mr Bob Cooling and Mr Zdenek Gregor.

Dr. Gozzarides continued his academic education with research grant supported by the Foundation Iacocca and the Medical School of Harvard at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, working with Professor Donald D'Amico. His research included studies on the surgery of the optic disc in a central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) as well as the removal of the inner aphoretic membrane (ILM) with laser Heritage:YAG using biological pigments.

Since 2001 he has been working professionally in Athens, where his clinical practice focuses on advanced vitreoretinal surgery and in complex retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and inflammatory retinal diseases.

His work is particularly focused on innovation of surgical techniques of vitrectomy.

In 2003 he presented a modification of the classic 20-gauge pars plana vitrectomy, developing a intercostal, transconjunctival technique without sutures, which reduced surgery time and post-operative inflammation.

This technique was presented at international conferences and published in the scientific journal RETINA, and has since been adopted by many surgeons worldwide.

Dr. Gozzarides was also one of the first to adopt modern technologies in retinal surgery, introducing the microsection systems 25+ gauge. (ConstellationAlcon)

Today he operates with the platform UNITY of Alcon, which allows the use of even smaller tools (27+ gauge) and helps improve surgical accuracy and outcomes.

He has written more than 40 scientific publications in international journals

and it is author at Ryans Retina (6th, 7th and 8th edition), one of the most important and most recognized textbooks in the field of retinal pathology and surgery.

At the same time, he has contributed as an author to other international scientific books.

In addition, it participates as judge (reviewer) in prestigious international scientific journals, including
