The advice of an ophthalmologist is essential for all expectant mothers with myopia, who are advised to visit an ophthalmologist at least twice.<\/p>\n<p>If vision problems are present or detected, special attention should be paid in preparation for childbirth.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, the expectant mother should not neglect to visit an ophthalmologist in addition to her gynecologist. The period of pregnancy is directly related to hormonal changes, the effects of which differ in each person! The eyes are one of the organs that can be affected by these changes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women who wear contact lenses sometimes notice that they feel uncomfortable with them during pregnancy. If this is the case, try to wear your glasses and return to wearing lenses after the pregnancy is over.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes with the onset of pregnancy a deterioration of vision may be observed. However, because women become more \u00absuspicious\u00bb during pregnancy, it is possible that their perception of worsening vision is incorrect. However, sometimes their fears turn out to be well-founded.<\/li>\n<li>During diagnosis, ophthalmologists examine the degree of refraction, i.e. the prescription of the glasses and whether it has changed, and also the condition of the retina to detect any degenerative changes or holes. The aim is to prevent any bleeding or cracks and to keep the eyes in good condition. To this end, ophthalmologists also examine the fundus of the eye and measure intraocular pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>- Any vascular disorders may cause dots (flies) to appear in the vision. This is not always worrying but it is good to report to the doctor as it may be an indication of a retinal abnormality. Therefore, it is useful to be examined to make sure everything is fine<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pregnancy and retina<br \/><\/strong>The retina is the most vulnerable part of the visual system during pregnancy. Retina is called a thin layer of nerve tissue at the back of the eye that absorbs light. It is a complex structure. The thin layer of light-sensitive photoreceptor cells is its main part. The retina is responsible for perceiving the image, which is projected onto the retina through the cornea and crystalline lens, and for converting it into nerve impulses that are transmitted within the brain. The main problems associated with the retina are retinal dystrophy, perforation and retinal detachment.<\/p>\n<p>To protect expectant mothers from any complications in the eyes during pregnancy, ophthalmologists recommend a general eye examination and in particular a retinal examination between 10<sup>from<\/sup>\u00a0and 14<sup>from<\/sup>week of pregnancy, regardless of the vision up to that time. If no problems are found, the next test can be scheduled for much later, just before the due date, for example between 32 and 36 weeks. But if you have myopia, then it would be a good idea, according to ophthalmologists, to check more frequently as, during pregnancy, a woman's whole body changes, and so do the eyes within it. For this reason, the visual system requires special attention from the expectant mom!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will the birth be?;<\/strong><br \/>Every woman with eye problems faces the following question...can she give birth normally or should she have a caesarean section? There is no simple answer to this question but it depends on several factors such as the eye fundus and retina, the general condition of the pregnant woman, age, etc. Caesarean is a surgical procedure in which the extraction of the baby is performed through an incision in the anterior abdominal wall and uterus. The risk to a woman's health from a caesarean section is about 12 times greater when compared to that of a normal birth. For this reason, this operation is only recommended when it is necessary, i.e. in cases where a normal birth is not possible or is considered dangerous for the mother and the baby. Unfortunately, several of the cases in which caesarean section is recommended are due to retinal dystrophy. The likelihood of retinal detachment in women who have high myopia or other abnormalities in the fundus of the eye is greatly increased during the normal delivery process because of fluctuations in blood pressure and intraocular pressure during ejection.<\/p>\n<p>Modern medicine can prevent dystrophic retinal changes and manage the risks of retinal detachment with prophylactic laser photocoagulation. This procedure creates retinal adhesions in weak spots and around holes.  Healing takes place at the retinal laser spots and this provides a secure bond of the retina to the choroid. This procedure can be performed at any time before pregnancy or during pregnancy up to 35<sup>\u03b7<\/sup>\u00a0week.<\/p>\n<p>The condition of the retina is not always related to the degree of myopia. Often a high degree of myopia does not affect the retina, which remains reasonably stable, without cracks and changes. And on the other hand respectively, a low degree of myopia can cause problems at the bottom. So if you are planning a pregnancy or are already pregnant, you should have an eye examination.
