Flashes and especially flies are symptoms that usually appear during middle age and later.<\/p>\n
They are due to the liquefaction of the vitreous body. The vitreous body is a gel-like substance or substance that fills the entire inner cavity of the eye. With age and as the tissues of the body (skin, muscles, fatty tissue) loosen, the vitreous body loosens and becomes fluid.<\/p>\n
This fluidization does not occur quickly and suddenly throughout the entire amount of the vitreous, but starts at certain points (which are most often located in the centre of the cavity of the eyeball). With this fluidization, the refractive index of the vitreous changes, resulting in \u2018denser\u2019 refractive media elsewhere and \u2018thinner\u2019 media elsewhere. This difference in the refractive index between liquids and solids causes the symptom of dark spots (flies, spiders, garbage) which are really very annoying.<\/p>\n
Over time, the liquefaction extends from the centre to the periphery, so that the outer part of the vitreous - its cortex -, i.e. the part that is adjacent to the retina, starts to detach from it. This process is called vitreous detachment. The adhesions of the vitreous cortex to the retina are sometimes very loose and the detachment occurs without symptoms (asymptomatic) or they are moderate to very strong where symptoms are seen (flashes like lightning or flashes of lightning). If the adhesions are very strong then during the separation of the vitreous from the retina, cracks appear in the retina which will lead to detachment.<\/p>\n
If the liquefaction and detachment of the vitreous is completed without any problems from the retina then the patient has completely escaped the risk of a future retinal detachment.<\/p>\n
Statistical studies worldwide show that one in a thousand people (1%0) will experience retinal detachment at some point in their lives (and more specifically during vitreous detachment). Factors such as myopia or high myopia, previous cataract surgery, and eye injury raise this rate from one in a thousand to one in a hundred or more (1%-3%).<\/p>\n
