{"id":1683,"date":"2015-01-13T18:47:01","date_gmt":"2015-01-13T16:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magenta-gull-175109.hostingersite.com\/i-technologia-epanaferei-to-fos\/"},"modified":"2015-01-13T18:47:01","modified_gmt":"2015-01-13T16:47:01","slug":"i-technologia-epanaferei-to-fos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myretina.gr\/en\/i-technologia-epanaferei-to-fos\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology brings back the light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u0397 <strong>Hellenic Retina Vitreous Society<\/strong> announced yesterday, at a press conference held at the Athens Hilton Hotel, the main topics to be discussed at this year's <strong>Panhellenic Retina Congress, which will take place on January 15-17, 2015 at the Athens Hilton Hotel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.gotzaridis.gr\/images\/timthumb.jpg&quot;\" alt=\"&quot;timthumb.jpg&quot;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The data in our country show that <strong>the most common retinal diseases<\/strong> is the <strong>diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, whether wet or dry, and hereditary diseases.<\/strong> These conditions affect both men and women, in both men and women, in <strong>ages 40 and over.<\/strong> Some of the factors to which they are due are nutritional (diabetes), sociological (smoking, sports, sun exposure, etc.) and heredity.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>10th Panhellenic Retina-Hyaloid Conference<\/h2>\n<p><img src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.gotzaridis.gr\/images\/10synedrio.jpg&quot;\" alt=\"&quot;10synedrio.jpg&quot;\" \/>At this year's Conference, in addition to the statistics of each country, key issues will be discussed, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diseases that will be better treated with the new drugs. Extensive and in-depth reporting on these by distinguished foreign scientists.<\/li>\n<li>Surgical machines that improve the ability of surgeons to deal more effectively with their surgical cases.<\/li>\n<li>As well as the pioneering Argus II implant, a unique device, the first approved worldwide, which today helps restore some degree of functional vision for people suffering from blindness. The implant <strong>Argus II<\/strong> has already been implanted in 85 patients with melanocytic retinopathy worldwide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More specifically, the Argus II consists of a tiny camera in special glasses<\/p>\n<p>worn by the patient - the camera captures the images and converts them into electrical signals. The signals are sent to an array of 60 electrodes which is implanted onto the patient's retina. The optical signals \u00abtravel\u00bb to the optic nerve and then to the brain after passing through a special small processing device worn on the patient's belt (Vision Processing Unit, VPU) which is battery powered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to Mr. Gozzarides, President of the Hellenic Retina Society,<\/strong> \u00abthe implant by no means offers patients perfect vision or what we call \"normal vision\", since patients see some light signals that they learn to translate. However, it does give them independence. Most important of all, these people \"reconnect\" with the world and improve their quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"\/en\/&quot;https:\/\/www.gotzaridis.gr\/pdf\/10osynedrio_program.pdf&quot;\/\">programme of the Conference<\/a> includes speeches by important Greek and foreign scientists, experts in the field of vision. The Annual Panhellenic Congress, which has been organized uninterrupted for the last 10 years, is a major event in the field of vision and vision science. <strong>the only and most essential source of continuing education for Greek ophthalmologists,<\/strong> as it brings together distinguished foreign speakers from all over the world, in order to convey <strong>everything new has been added in the field of vitreoretinal and retinal treatment, both in the pharmaceutical and surgical field.<\/strong> In addition, it promotes and honours all Greek ophthalmologists who specialise in the field, so that younger people can consult them and benefit from this concentrated offer of experience offered to them, through lectures and clinical tutorials. Finally, it encourages young colleagues who want to work in this field to prepare interesting papers and present them at the Congress, by establishing prizes for the best papers, equivalent to covering all the expenses of their authors, for attending the corresponding Pan-European Congresses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The aim of the EEAA is to broaden its objectives and to provide assistance and support to our fellow human beings, patients with eye diseases who end up with very low vision.<\/strong> In this field, its activities are expressed in the constant pursuit of ensuring that its members - for their patients - are provided with auxiliary material for dealing with the problems of their daily life and for the replenishment of areas of life affected by their condition.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent effort concerns<strong> the possibility of watching literary works and theatre performances with the help of audio media.<\/strong> In an effort to assist this sensitive portion of our fellow human beings, the EEAA has agreed to acquire the rights to well-known literary works, to record them, in order to place them on portable electronic media and to distribute them free of charge to medical doctors-members of the EEAA and to their final recipients, people with limited vision and\/or blind people.<\/p>\n<p>By the term <strong>talking books<\/strong> we mean audio books, where the voice of the narrator - reader has been digitally captured.They are mainly aimed at people with difficulty in accessing printed books, such as the visually impaired. Talking books are the easiest way for visually impaired people to access the content of books.
