It consists of 98% water, with the remaining 2% containing salts, sugars, proteins and a type of collagen. Due to its fluid texture it shapes the eye and keeps it firm.<\/p>\n<p>The components of the vitreous are not renewed as with other structures of the eye. Therefore any distortion or change in the vitreous (e.g. bleeding) is treated surgically if the ophthalmologist surgeon deems it necessary.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>What is posterior vitreous detachment?;<\/h2>\n<p>Normally over time, as all tissues relax (e.g. skin, fat, muscles), the vitreous also relaxes, resulting in its fluidisation and reduction in volume (vitreous liquefaction).<\/p>\n<p>This can lead to detachment of the vitreous from a posterior wall of the eye and thus patients may report photopsia (flashes) and myopia (flies).<\/p>\n<p>This condition is called posterior vitreous detachment and needs monitoring, but it is nothing to worry about.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>What is a vitrectomy? When is it done?;<\/h2>\n<p>Posterior vitreous detachment is usually not operated on.<\/p>\n<p>However, if the flies and flashes strongly affect vision, then the vitreous is surgically removed by vitrectomy or vitrectomy.<\/p>\n<p>The ophthalmologist surgeon may also recommend vitrectomy in cases where the photopic and myopic conditions coexist with another retinal condition such as epiretinal membrane disease, diabetic retinopathy, vitreoretinal traction, macular hole and retinal detachment.<\/p>\n<p>In these cases, the vitreous is removed through vitrectomy to avoid any complications that may lead to new detachment or bleeding in the retina.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>What is the vitrectomy procedure?;<\/h2>\n<p>During vitrectomy surgery (vitrectomy), the ophthalmologist surgeon removes the vitreous from inside the eye.<\/p>\n<p>The instruments used (vitreotome, intravitreal light, infusion cannula) are inserted through small holes made in the sclera (white part of the eye) (Figure intraocular procedures such as laser or cryocoagulation in cases such as retinal detachment in order to bond the detached retina to the eye wall.<\/p>\n<p>During vitrectomy, the vitreous is replaced by saline, gas or silicone to keep the eye firm and functioning as it would with the vitreous.<\/p>\n<p>Tiny incisions usually close on their own or small stitches can be used, which are absorbed by the body.<\/p>\n<p>Figure 1: Vitrectomy<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>What should I watch out for after vitrectomy surgery?;<\/h2>\n<p>Postoperatively, if sutures are placed, the patient may have the sensation of a foreign body.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor's postoperative instructions should be followed consistently, both in terms of medication and correct posture, in order for the surgery to be considered successful.<\/p>\n<p>If silicone oil is placed, it is removed after a few months, while if gas is placed, the vision is blurred for the first few days and will improve as the gas is absorbed and replaced by the body's own serum within the first few weeks.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Are there any complications after vitrectomy?;<\/h2>\n<p>Like any other type of surgery, vitrectomy can have complications such as intraocular infection, retinal detachment (if proper handling is not followed), high intraocular pressure or bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>A common consequence of vitrectomy is the appearance of cataracts within the first few years after surgery, in people after the age of 40.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Success rates of vitrectomy surgery<\/h2>\n<p>The timeliness of the condition plays an important role and therefore the success of the intervention is directly related to the time of treatment.<\/p>\n<p>However, high success rates are observed in the repair of conditions that
