It is also responsible for converting light energy (light) into an electrical signal so that information can be transferred to the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Vascular (circulatory) diseases of the retina include blockage of the central retinal artery, which emerges from the optic nerve sheath (optic nerve head). In this disorder, there is a cessation of blood flow to the inner layers, resulting in the fundus appearing lighter in colour in this area (Figure 1). A characteristic symptom is a sudden decrease in vision from one eye, without pain.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.gotzaridis.gr\/images\/apofraksi.png&quot;\" alt=\"&quot;apofraxia.png&quot;\" \/>Figure 1: Central retinal artery occlusion,<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent German study, central retinal artery occlusion is associated with an increased risk of undiagnosed cardiovascular problems more than previously known.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrokes\u201d in the eye are among the most difficult cases in ophthalmology. As reported in the American Academy of Ophthalmology's journal Ophthalmology, there is no sure cure for the acute treatment of the condition. However, it has been recognized that there is a link between strokes and cardiovascular risk factors.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr Pielen of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Hannover, Germany, after non-inflammatory central retinal artery occlusion, treatment options for the eye are very limited, as there is no treatment available that could prove effective in a prospective and randomised clinical trial.<\/p>\n<p>As Dr Pielen explained, the promising therapeutic option of intra-arterial fibrinolysis was tested by the European evaluation team. However, the results were disappointing, as selective intra-arterial fibrinolysis was not superior compared to the conventional therapy already being followed. Although the study was terminated, it is still one of the few prospective clinical trials investigating acute non-arterial central retinal artery occlusion.<\/p>\n<p>In order to understand the cardiovascular risk factors in patients with \u201cocular strokes\u201d a study was carried out in Germany. Because of the previous disappointing results, the aim of the new study was to derive appropriate results that will help and advise patients with central retinal artery occlusion, but at the same time provide solutions for ophthalmologists regarding cardiovascular risk factors.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis took a relatively long time, but the results were significant, as a high percentage of cardiovascular risk factors were observed. The study found a high proportion of patients with carotid artery stenosis, and 5 patients developed stroke within 4 weeks after central retinal artery occlusion. In addition, the researchers were surprised to find that while risk factors were present in 67% of patients with a history of central retinal artery occlusion, the integrated treatment of the study identified at least one new risk factor in 78% of patients. Furthermore, 31 patients (40%) had carotid artery stenosis at least 70% and 11 patients developed a stroke. Arterial hypertension was found in 56 patients (73%), while 12 study participants (16%) were diagnosed for the first time. The incidence of heart disease was also prevalent (22% coronary artery disease, 20% atrial fibrillation, 17% valvular heart disease).<\/p>\n<p>Another important finding of the study is that risk factors predominate in patients with central retinal artery occlusion, where the risk of stroke is 2.7 times higher in these patients than in healthy controls.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent stroke in patients with central retinal artery occlusion, all patients should undergo comprehensive cardiovascular risk factor screening, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend that awareness of the risks secondary to ocular strokes should be expanded, but also that there should be collaboration between specialists such as ophthalmologists, cardiologists and neurologists to prevent patients and better predict similar serious conditions, such as partial retinal artery occlusion or transient visual field blindness.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u03a4\u03b1
