Until recently, it was believed that depending on the type of anti-angiogenic agent used to treat retinal diseases, there was a corresponding effect on the increase in intraocular pressure in patients.<\/p>\n
Researchers from Vancouver, British Columbia, according to a paper presented at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, found no significant differences in the increase in intraocular pressure in patients treated with three different anti-angiogenic agents.<\/p>\n
David Na, BS, and colleagues from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, evaluated 73 patients who were initially treated with a single anti-angiogenic agent.<\/p>\n
\"Among the three agents (bevacizumab - AVASTIN, aflibercept - EYLEA, ranibizumab - LUCENTIS), we found no significant differences in intraocular pressure,\" Na told Healio.com\/OSN.<\/p>\n
As he said, the investigation looked at race, why the patient was injected, crystalline lens condition and gender.<\/p>\n
However, as he pointed out, \u00abthe biggest limiting factor for this result was that in their lifetime many patients change medications during their treatment, so we're really limited by that.\u00bb.<\/p>\n
Na also said, \"So we decided, after showing this trend, to include patients who received a combination of all three factors and that's where we started to see some interesting relationships between them.\".<\/p>\n
The researchers evaluated patients treated in only one eye and, as Na pointed out, \"this allowed us to use the other eye as a reference eye.\".<\/p>\n
Na also added, \u00abWhen we took into account, again, race, disease and crystalline lens status, we didn't see anything significant, but what was interesting was that in women we saw an increase in intraocular pressure, whereas in men we didn't.\u00bb \"I'm not sure why, but we know that women have a shallower anterior chamber depth and maybe that has some effect on this finding. But we're not sure.\"<\/p>\n
Na explained that he and his colleagues chose to conduct this study \"because the drugs are different sizes. A lot of the leading theories now say that these protein molecules mix and block flow in the chamber and this may play a role in increasing intraocular pressure.\u00bb.<\/p>\n
Finally, Na said, \"Overall, we showed that the anti-angiogenic agent does not really have an impact on increasing intraocular pressure. Second, consistent with what is reported in the literature, increased number of injections is associated with an increase in intraocular pressure, and third, we saw that women had an increase in intraocular pressure, whereas men did not.
