Dementia cases are increasing as the world's population ages and Alzheimer's medication is proving ineffective in clinical trials.<\/p>\n
As the world population ages, the rates of people with senile dementia are increasing. All the drugs tried so far against Alzheimer's have had disappointing results. Thus, scientists believe that the time has come to attempt a different, if not curative, deterrent approach. Now, experts say, we must focus on preventing risk factors for dementia, such as unregulated hypertension, hearing loss and smoking.<\/p>\n
Another factor is impaired vision. A new study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, finds that it would be possible to prevent 62% of current cases of dementia by altering some risk factors. One hundred thousand fewer people would suffer from dementia if the necessary attention had been paid to maintaining their vision.<\/p>\n
In 2017, the Lancet Commission, consisting of doctors of all specialties, after analysing thousands of studies, came up with eight risk factors for dementia: hypertension, low education, deafness, smoking, obesity, lack of exercise, depression, diabetes and lack of social interaction. In 2020, the list was enriched by excessive alcohol consumption, air pollution and cranial injuries. The committee even concluded that 40% of dementia cases, in theory, would have been prevented or delayed if these factors were eliminated.<\/p>\n
Dr Joshua Ehrlich, an ophthalmic surgeon and public health researcher at the University of Michigan, who is a signatory to the study, hopes that vision problems will be added to the list of risks.<\/p>\n
Why do hearing and vision problems increase the risk of dementia?;<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr Ehrlich explains that impairment of these two senses affects cognitive skills, limiting the patient's ability to participate in physical and social activities. \u00abIf you can't see the cards of the deck, you don't play pool with your friends,\u00bb he points out. Social isolation is an ideal background for brain degeneration.<\/p>\n There are certainly other factors that predispose to dementia that we cannot change, such as genes, family history, or simply the passage of years.
