Tears are our body's natural way of keeping our eyes clean and protected. However, there is a possibility that this mechanism may not work properly and tears may pool in our eye or flow unchecked.<\/p>\n
Let's see what the causes of this can be and how they are treated:<\/p>\n
Tearing can be very annoying as it blurs vision and patients need to wipe their eyes, in some cases almost constantly.<\/p>\n
Tears are produced by the lacrimal gland, which is located under the upper eyelid. Each blink of the eyelids, which must be in the correct anatomical position, spreads the tears over the surface of the eye, carrying them towards the inner corner of the eye. There are the tear ducts, from which the tears are guided into the lacrimal sac and from there they enter the nasolacrimal duct, which drains the tears into the nose.<\/p>\n
A first cause is that the eye may be watering precisely because it may be irritated from blepharitis or eye allergy or from dry eye syndrome, in which the eye dries out when we look at a screen and reflexively overproduces tears. Another cause is the abnormal position of the eyelids, as occurs when they are loose, in paresis of a facial nerve, from cooling, or turning inward, entropion of the eyelid.<\/p>\n
Also, patients with thyroid, have exophthalmos and may have tears. Depending on the case, the inflammation, called blepharitis or dry eye, will need to be treated, or surgery to restore the position of the eyelids. This operation can also be combined with blepharoplasty.<\/p>\n
Another common cause of overflowing tears is when the duct that leads tears from the eye to the nasal cavity is either narrow or blocked, a condition that can occur in both children and adults.<\/p>\n
This condition can be serious because, apart from affecting the patient's quality of life, it can cause lacrimal cystitis, which is the inflammation of the sac that houses the tears. This is exactly where pus begins to collect, which circulates over the eye and can create an abscess on the cornea, which can even lead to a perforation of the eye.<\/p>\n
So let's look at how to treat the blocked tear duct. Patients who for years have been afraid to have surgery can now have it done with a pioneering method called endoscopic ascurinostomy. The purpose of this procedure is, once the nasolacrimal duct is blocked, to create a new tear drainage between the lacrimal sac and the inside of the nose, through a bypass, higher than the level of the nasolacrimal duct obstruction.<\/p>\n
With this technique, a small camera is inserted with an endoscope through the nose, some small tools or laser and we can make the tears fall into the nasal cavity, and thus solve the problem. The specialist surgeon with the endoscope and microtools approaches the area of the eyelids and the tear apparatus of the eye through the nasal cavity.<\/p>\n
This technique has a very high success rate, around 95%, and unlike the older technique, called external ascorinostomy, can give significant advantages:<\/p>\n
In the case where all the causes coexist, inflammation of the eye with a loose eyelid and blocked lacrimal duct, a complex treatment by the surgeon is needed in order to correct the causes in an operation during which all the procedures will be performed.<\/p>\n
