What is it?;<\/b> Best's disease is an autosomal dominant disorder first described in 1905. It is caused by a dysfunction of the melancholic epithelium (RPE), which leads to an accumulation of a substance called lipofuscin<\/b> under the macula.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The disease progresses in stages that are often named after the appearance of the lesion:<\/p>

  1. Stage Previtelliform:<\/b> Vision is excellent (10\/10) and the fundus appears normal, but the diagnosis can be made with Electro-ophthalmogram (EOG)<\/b>.<\/p><\/li>

  2. Vitelliform stadium (\u00abEgg yolk\u00bb):<\/b> A characteristic yellow round lesion appears on the macula. Vision usually remains good.<\/p><\/li>

  3. Pseudohypopyon stage:<\/b> The yellow material liquefies and precipitates, creating a horizontal level.<\/p><\/li>

  4. Vitelliruptive (\u00abOmelette\u00bb) stage:<\/b> The damage begins to break down and vision shows the first significant bending.<\/p><\/li>
